Most of the common problems with small engines point to fuels. However, if the carburetor fails to mix the fuel and air properly, engines malfunction. If a carburetor becomes dirty, it clogs easily which keeps it from functioning well.

Check all components to make sure they are clean, in good condition and firmly in place, including the spark plugs, muffler and fuel cap. Be sure wires and fuel hoses are intact and in good condition. Damaged fuel hoses can allow fuel to escape, which increases the risk of fire when they're near a hot engine.

Honda engines are probably top tier for small engines, as far as I've seen. Higher end Kholer engines are also good (the command series).
